What Are Keywords and Why Do They Matter?

You’ll notice that we mention “keywords” a lot when we talk about creating online income streams. And you’ll find some great keyword research tutorials in this forum.

But why are they important to understand?

“Keywords” (also known as search terms, search queries, focus keywords, and keyphrases) are the words and phrases you type into a search engine when you’re looking for information.

The intent of the keyword is to indicate the content of that web page, so that site visitors and search engines know exactly what the page is about.

Our goal is to help you get traffic to your website without paying for it, as much as possible. If Google ranks your page organically, that’s essentially FREE traffic.

It is possible, for most niches, to find keywords that will rank in Google. You need to do some research, and some niches are much more competitive than others.

We recommend creating your niche or affiliate blogs by focusing on long-tail keywords. These are usually less competitive and have relatively low search volume.

However, because they are very specific, they tend to convert at a much higher rate. For example, say you’re a car dealer, or you have one as a local client.

“Ford Mustang” gets about 201,000 searches a month. “Ford Mustang GT” gets about 33,100 searches a month. “Ford Mustang for sale” gets about 22,200 searches a month. As the search term gets more specific, the search volume drops.

But think about it – do you see why it would be better to rank for “Ford Mustang for sale”? People using that search term are much more likely to buy!

Choosing the best keywords, writing blog posts using those search terms, and setting up your site to make sure Google understands the search intent, are essential concepts.
